@encrypter46 You must be kidding. There’s Ella’s, there’s Billie,’s and both are great. Janis Joplin sounds just awful. I’ve always loved this song, but the video above is enough to make me wonder – for a second – if it’s the song or the singer. Here, it is the singer. She doesn’t have the softness required for this very poignant song.

Check out Janis Joplin’s Columbia session of this song. No one’s ever beat it!

@thegoatlocker agredd.

simply brillant….I always get in a mellow mood whenever I listen to her voice…its kind of a bitter sweet experience. Many folks has redone this song but Holiday,Fitzgerald & Mica Paris’version is probably the best.

i have old ass ears

Janis Joplin blows this one away

Miles Davis’ version is amazing as well.

Of course, it was common in the South during slavery that white infants were essentially brought up by black nannies. However, Summertime is a lullaby that was written specifically for the opera “Porgy and Bess” in 1935. The music is by George Gershwin, the lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, both white guys. The story plays long after abolition (in the 1920′s) in Charleston’s catfish row in an all-black community. The baby is Clara’s baby, both are black. .

She’s the best that ever was and ever will be

fantasia sung this song the year before this was posted on the same date which is my b day man this must be a sign or something

i love this song so much

Great Lady, Great Heart, And a class acyt by the greatest female singer ever

I was told this was a lullaby sung by black slaves to the white babies! I don’t know if it’s true but that’s what I heard so I found it interesting! But if you listen to the words it really souns like it.

1936 n-n

Norwegian huh?

It’s amazing to know, my soon to be country (wishing XD) has people with musical taste alike. n-n

I meant 40′s

60′s..

I didn’t know this song was so old, I’ve only heard the Janis Joplin version but I like it

What year is this..?

the best listening when you are alone, late at night and lonesome

@rachyi1993 Couldn’t agree more!

Everybody has his own taste in music.
((Thank god..))

Great song, great singer :)
Love the first 17 sec.
XD

You are ignorant!!!!!!!!! You can’t talk without knowing what jazz is!! Billie it’s the opposite of Ella, they are a legend, IN DIFFERENT WAYS! But you are only a ignorant listener…

i love it “and your ma is good looking”
billie holiday is a muse

What a beatiful tune!

Couldn’t disagree more. Billie gives it a shading and a nuance that is almost ominous. There are many great and beautiful versions, including Ella’s, but none as uniquely personal as Billie’s. She makes it her own.
